Happy Birthday Sir Walter Scott

Saturday, August the 15th, marked the birthday of Sir Walter Scott. A favorite of the Boston Unitarians and a favorite of this Boston Unitarian, Walter Scott was born in Edinburgh in 1771.

I am reminded of Mark Twain’s less than flattering opinion of Scott. Remember in Huck Finn the wrecked river boat was named for him. But Twain had little tolerance for any of the Romantics.

Thank you very much for writing! I had forgotten that. Scott was, like most of the romantics, a fairly easy target. I prefer the assessment of George Simenon who said, upon viewing the magnificent Scott memorial, "It is right that he should have the greatest memorial. He was the father of us all."
Thanks again and
Blessings, BU
