Jeremy Belknap was born on this day in 1744. Born in Boston and graduated from Harvard, Belknap began his ministerial career in New Hampshire. He was a supporter of the Patriot cause and preached popular pro-revolutionary sermons. He later became William Ellery Channing's predecessor at what became the Federal Street Church.Belknap was an antiquarian and one of America's first historians. He was a compiler of documents and and assiduous researcher. Finally, he was a founder of the Massachusetts Historical Society.
And if all that wasn't enough, he compiled a hymn-book that was much used in New England.
